Carousel is an award-winning learning disability led arts organisation.
Founded in 1982 we work to promote the active involvement of people with learning disabilities in the arts, teaching new artistic skills and developing existing talents. Our art provision has been recognised nationally and internationally for its high quality and unique approach.
Much has changed for people with a learning disability over the 30 years that Carousel has existed. The key shift has seen people moving out of large long-stay institutions into the community. Legislation has developed to establish rights, support and services to allow people to take more control of their lives. However, learning disabled people continue to face many challenges and discrimination and the necessary support for self-determination is often limited. Whilst laws, policies and strategies are vitally important in creating the framework for developing equality and opportunities, it is organisations like Carousel that put the flesh on the bones of that framework: changing the culture and empowering people with a learning disability to speak up for themselves and their rights. Over the last 32 years Carousel has both shaped and reflected these changes and continues to develop its practice, question how to do things better and make sure that people with a learning disability are fully and properly represented.
We are passionate about inspiring the artistic ambitions of learning-disabled film makers, performers and musicians and nurturing them to choreograph performance pieces, direct films and write and perform their music, as well as lead workshops for other adults and children with learning disabilities. We also develop initiatives to Share Our Skills within the national arts scene and other professional settings.
